Description: Adinkra, in Akan culture, is a set of visual symbols used to recall ethics and ways of seeing the world. It is not a writing system meant to convey fixed meanings. This work embraces both before and after Adinkra was systematized as symbolism, and focuses on what remains in the form itself. Not for survival, but to show a way of being. Humans rely too much on meaning. That is why I collect forms that exist before meaning, and forms that remain after meaning has been used up. This is not prayer. It is emotion from before meaning was born. The way patterns exist—symbols that remain without anyone fully knowing why—felt close to street culture. Street is not about location. It is an attitude that remains even after meaning stops working. They are simply there. That is everything. Nothing more, nothing less. Meaning always comes later. It may become a flag of rebellion, or a permit to forgive someone. If that is how you see it, then that is what it becomes. The pattern does not stop you. Why Adinkra is here— because it has continued to exist, undeniably, in a world that is changing.
